Introduction
The Fleece Inn is a 14th Century quintessential English pub, owned by the National Trust and run with a love of tradition. Its picturesque location nestled in the Cotswolds coupled with the period features of the pub itself create the atmosphere of a time gone by.
The Master’s Bed Chamber boasts a stunning view across the village of Bretforton onto St Leonards Church. This quaint double room with ensuite toilet and shower provides the perfect place to rest after a meal and refreshing pint...or two.
History to the present day
Built in the time of Chaucer, the Fleece has many stories to tell. It houses one of England’s oldest collections of Pewter amongst many other traditional features such as the open fire places and a medieval thatched barn where weddings and functions are often held. The Inn was originally a medieval farm house, with farm animals occupying one end of the building and the yeoman family living at the other. It became a village inn in 1848, a role it still fulfills.
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Lola Taplin in 1977, the last of the Byrd family who originally built the house centuries ago, the Fleece was almost lost in a tragic fire in 2004. A massive renovation of the building followed and the Fleece was restored to retain its integrity and traditional features.
Food and Drinks
The Fleece is no longer just the watering hole of times gone by, its ever growing popularity as a restaurant and wedding venue entices visitors from far and wide. The traditional English cooking, using locally sourced ingredients and the many traditional ales and ciders, some of which are made on the premises, make The Fleece an ideal place for a special occasion or a light lunch.
During the winter the open log fires in all three dining areas create a truly welcoming and relaxed atmosphere whilst in the summer months the pub becomes a hive of activity. Diners can enjoy the sunshine in the apple orchard whilst the children make the most of the play area.
Other facilities
Free on-site car parking.
The Barn houses many musical performances. With our history firmly rooted in English traditions, there is often a folk gig or two each month and once a week the locals get together and demonstrate their vocal and musical talents in an open acoustic evening.
The Fleece Inn has held a civil ceremony licence for the past 7 years and is becoming an ever more popular venue for wedding celebrations. Nestled in the rural village of Bretforton the location is perfect for your special day.
With ever growing experince in catering for weddings of varying sizes, styles and budgets we pride ourselves on offering something for everyone. From the traditional to the more laid back the Mediaeval thatched barn lends itself to either, this unique venue will certainly impress your guests!

Miss Delyth Roberts, April 2012: A lovely friendly pub, full of character and history...I arrived a couple of hours after my boyfriend and he looked so comfortable, chilled out and part of the furniture that I knew we were going to have a good time. The locals were friendly and the staff were great...food really good too, we were so well looked after. The room is small and cosy but there was nothing to grumble about - it was what you would expect in an old inn. It was clean and comfortable and we wanted for nothing. The staff and in particular the landlord was so accommodating and laid back and he left us for a great lie in with no rush for coming down for breakfast...our breakfast was laid out on a table in front of the fire for us even after he'd opened up. So relaxing and we've already booked in to return. Can not recommend it enough.
Ms Ros Gray, April 2012: Lovely place to stay. Had breakfast by the log fire which was a nice touch. Staff very welcoming.
Miss Sarah Bailey, February 2012: A thoroughly enjoyable experience, we were made to feel very welcome
by everyone we met
Mr James Blackledge, November 2011: Fantastic pub with great beer and wonderful atmosphere. Bedroom was small but very clean and had all the basic facilities. Breakfast cooked by the landlord was to die for!
