Introduction

Glenalmond House is a detached Victorian stone-built house, located in a beautiful part of the city of Edinburgh. Just one mile to the Royal Mile in the centre of Edinburgh, it is easy to walk to the tourist attractions or to hop on one of the cheap and frequent local buses.

The accommodation offered is 4 star rated by VisitScotland, with a variety of rooms, from single, to double or twin and family. Several rooms have ornate 4-poster or Rococco beds, ideal for that special occasion. All rooms are en-suite and ground floor rooms are available. There is guaranteed off-street parking for all guests. 

History to the present day

Built around 1880, Glenalmond House was originally a large family home for the rich merchants of Edinburgh. The house retains many of the original features. These include plaster mouldings and ceiling roses in the largest rooms, and a black marble fireplace in the drawing room - now the breakfast dining room. The stone staircase leading to the first floor has the original metal bannister.

Food and Drinks

Breakfast is included and is served between 8.00am and 9.30am at weekends and busy times of the year, such as summer. At other quieter times breakfast is served between 8.00am and 9.00am.

Although Glenalmond House does not offer other meals there are numerous pubs and restaurants within a short walk.

Grounds and gardens

To the front of the house is the car park, with numerous flower and shrub borders.The rooms at the back of the house look out onto the landscaped gardens and on the first floor it is possible to see the bowling green beyond. To the side of the house there is a patio area with plants and seating where guests can relax. This is also the designated smoking area.

Other facilities

The breakfast room has a small lounge area where guests are welcome to sit. Here there is a laptop available for guest use, free of charge. There are also a selection of brochures and magazines located in this area.

Directions: Take the A701 towards Edinburgh. 

By Bus or Train: Either take a taxi from the train or bus stations in the city centre, which will cost you about £7, or you can take the local bus from Princes Street. The bus stop is opposite the Scott Monument and Waverley Bridge, Bus number 3, 3A, 29, 31, 37 or 47. The fare is £1.30, and you will need exact fare as drivers do not give change. Ask the driver for Mayfield Gardens. Get off at the stop after this road and you are only yards from Glenalmond House on the same side of the road.

From Edinburgh Airport: Taxi from the airport will cost around £20.00-£25.00. You can also take the express bus to Waverley Bridge (£5.00 return, £3.00 single). Then walk up to Princes Street and cross the road. Take the bus from the stop opposite the Scott Monument.
