Introduction
Harewood House is the Yorkshire home of the Earl and Countess of Harewood, designed by John Carr and completed in 1772 with exquisite interiors by Robert Adam.
Collections inside the house include English 18th century and Italian Renaissance masterpieces, Chippendale furniture, fine porcelain, royal photographs and memorabilia of Lord Harewood's mother, HRH the Princess Mary. A servants exhibitions displays the accommodation and work of the houses's staff including the kitchen, scullery and servant's hall. There is a permanent display in the housekeeper's room devoted to HRH Princess Mary, the Earl's mother and another exhibition charts the history of the sugar trade.
Outside you'll find gardens landscaped by Capability Brown which include formal, walled and exotic gardens. Visit the the bird garden which houses over 100 species of rare and exotic bird species.
History to the present day
The house was built from 1759 to 1771 for Edwin Lascelles, whose family purchased the estate after making its fortune in the West Indies through, slave trading and lending money to planters. The house was designed by the architects John Carr and Robert Adam.
Food and Drinks
The Courtyard Cafe offers a selection of hot and cold dishes, it is open from 10.00am to 5.30pm and to 8pm on Thursdays during the summer). The Terrace Tearooms offer a range of light snacks, open from 10.30am to 5.30pm. Ice Cream kiosks are located around the grounds, serving ice creams, hot and cold drinks.
Grounds and gardens
The house has extensive grounds including a Terrace, with its restored Victorian Parterre, flower borders and landscaped 'Capability' Brown parkland. Make time to visit the formal gardens, Himilayan Gardens with its waterfall, bridges and Bhutanese Stupa and the Walled Garden, where organic vegetables, fruit trees grow and there are resident beehives.
For younger visitors, visit Harewood's wooden adventure play area for children.
The Harewood Bird Garden has over 100 species of birds, including penguins, flamingos, and wild birds.
