Introduction

Housesteads Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland Stands proud on a dramatic escarpment. Nowhere else will you find a sense of what life was like high up on the famous Roman frontier. On the edge of Hadrian’s empire and with commanding views, it is one of the most complete Roman forts in Britain.

The museum informs visitors about almost 2,000 years of history and shows how 800 soldiers would have lived on this hill top fort. Explore the commandant’s house and barrack blocks, which once were garrisoned by 800 soldiers and see if you can find the well-preserved latrines. Housesteads Roman Fort is a good base for a walk along the spectacular Hadrian’s Wall. Bring the whole family including the dog and a picnic to enjoy the breathtaking views from this hilltop fort. No need to go to Rome, the history is right here.

Entry is through a small museum, displaying a complete model of how Housesteads once appeared. Excavations at the fort have revealed four double-portal gateways, the turreted curtain wall, three visible barrack blocks and of course the famous and well-preserved latrines. At the centre are the most important buildings: the commandant's house, headquarters building and hospital.
