Introduction
Situated beside the River Tay, 16th-century Kenmore Hotel is Scotland's oldest inn. Kenmore is a village surrounded by acres of countryside, including woods, castles and mountains. Centrally located at the mouth of Loch Tay, the Kenmore Hotel is ideal for touring whisky distilleries, Taymouth Castle, Blair Castle and the Rob Roy & Trossachs visitor's centre in nearby Callander. Plenty of sporting activities can be found nearby such as golf, salmon fishing, water sports, walking and cycling.
Kenmore provides comfortable ensuite rooms and most have views over the River Tay. Choose from standard, executive and luxury suites which have a corner jazuzzi bath, own balcony overlooking the river and a small conservatory, to enjoy the views, what ever the weather.
History to the present day
Built in 1572. On that day Sir Colin Campbell of Breadalbane granted a lease to his servant How Hay and his wife Christian Stanes "an honest hostelrie" which should at all times have sufficient ale, bread and other provisions.
In the 17th Century, Cromwell's army marched past the front door of the Kenmore Hotel in pursuit of the Earl of Montrose. As the smell of musket shot drifted through the village square, the roundhead officers tucked into Archie's Wee Bar Feastie Menu. Praise was forthcoming and so the Kenmore hotel was spared the terrible torching and destruction that took place from Kenmore to Glen Lyon and beyond.
Rabbie Burns in 1787 was so struck by the area, that he composed a poem sitting on the bridge over the Tay and wrote it in pencil on the chimney breast of the fireplace in our Poets Bar where it is to this day.
In 1842 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert celebrated their honeymoon at Taymouth Castle. During their memorable stay, they too were reputed to have sampled Archie's Wee Bar Feastie Menu and found it much to their liking.
Food and Drinks
Full English breakfast included as is served in the hotel's Taymouth Restaurant. The award winning restaurant offers excellent AA Rosette standard cuisine in an elegant setting, with panoramic views over the River Tay. Open from 8.00am until 9.00pm.
Choose from three comfortable bars. The Poet's Bar is a traditional bar, displaying a poem written on the chimney, by Robert Burns and a cosy fireplace. The Boars Head Bar, which is more modern has a terrace overlooking the beautiful River Tay. Archie's Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet coffee or light bite to eat.
Grounds and gardens
Walk along the river or relax on the terrace and enjoy the views. Kenmore Hotel boasts 1½ miles of challenging salmon fishing for both novice and professional anglers alike on the famous Upper Tay, which is free to hotel guests.
Other facilities
The Lounge area is in a secluded section of the Hotel where guests can enjoy comfortable sofas while they listen to music, watch some television or play board games. 24hr reception and room service.
