Introduction

Staying at the Kennard gives you the chance to discover and enjoy a true Georgian Town House – now restored to a charming small hotel with its own special character. Built as a lodging house in 1794 for the grand era of Bath’s elegance and prosperity, all its 12 bedrooms are thoughtfully and individually furnished for your every comfort.

Offering all the modern features which are now expected: en-suites with showers, telephones with data port, wireless internet connection in all rooms, satellite television (most rooms now with plasma screens) and beverage trays.

Ideally situated both for the city and its surrounding attractions: travel north to the picturesque villages of the Cotswolds; south to Glastonbury and Wells (enjoy the choir singing in the Cathedral at Evensong); east to Stonehenge, the most awe-inspiring sight in Europe. So much history and so accessible – your stay will never be long enough.

The Kennard, just over Pulteney Bridge and only minutes from the Abbey and Roman Baths, with easy access from London and from the railway station, really is the ideal location to enjoy the delights of this famous city.

History to the present day

The Kennard is a grade I listed Georgian Town House in bathstone built in 1794 by the architect Thomas Baldwin on the Pulteney estate. It was originally a 2 bedroom lodging house which was rented for the season from October to March.

Food and Drinks

The original Georgian kitchen, now a delightful breakfast room, is the setting for a full choice of English or Continental breakfasts.

The Kennard is only a few yards from the busy City Centre where there is a wide choice of restaurants to satisfy all tastes and occasions. The proprietors are more than happy to help you to choose the perfect restaurant and reserve a table for you.

Grounds and gardens

In September 2006 faced with an area of wasted space at the rear of the building which did not seem to belong to the hotel due to many years of neglect, with overgrown conifers reaching up to the 3rd floor and a typical example of a contemporary mass-market garden-shed, it had the appearance of an urban jungle.

Feeling a duty to re-create the kind of garden that would have existed when the house was built in 1794. With the addition of the garden, the building would acquire a new dimension, linking it to its surroundings. One of the sources of inspiration in re-creating the Georgian townhouse garden, being in Bath, has inevitably been the writing of Jane Austen. She had a keen interest in gardens, and has left us detailed descriptions of plants and flowers that were fashionable at the time and which have been included in the garden.

, April 2011: The Kennard is exactly how I'd like my hotel to be if I owned a hotel. Unreservedly recommended and look forward to another reason to visit Bath
