Introduction

Knockderry House Hotel is a 4 star family-owned hotel situated on the banks of Loch Long which is one of the magnificent sea lochs of the west coast of Scotland. Run by husband and wife Beth and Murdo MacLeod and their team of local staff, Knockderry House aims to offer a truly Scottish welcome to all visitors to the area, and the provision of the finest Scottish local produce and hospitality.

With sea loch views stretching down the Clyde estuary and Cowal hills, the area is idyllically peaceful yet it is less than an hour’s drive from Glasgow.

All the rooms in the main house have been individually decorated and furnished with antique furniture and paintings by local Scottish artists reflecting the age and style of the original house. Four new rooms have been added in the Leiper Wing with comfortable beds  finished with the finest Egyptian linen, whilst Scottish organic handmade soaps, handmade shortbread, fluffy bathrobes provide little touches of luxury to your stay.

Single occupancy rates are offered please see Available Rooms for the promotion code.

History to the present day

Although there has been a dwelling of some kind on this site for centuries, Knockderry House as it stands today (meaning ‘hill of oak’ in Gaelic) was originally built around 1846 as a summer retreat.

In 1890 Mr D Anderson, a wealthy wool merchant, decided to upgrade the house in the fashion of the day and asked the well known architect Leiper to draw up plans. The Guest Lounge - and the rooms above were added at that time along with all the turrets and towers that give the house its current distinctive look.

The Lounge Bar was originally the Music Room and Chapel and still retains many of the original features as does the Billiard Room and the Dining Room, which boasts stained glass by James Guthrie Jnr and Daniel Cottier.

Food and Drinks

Our menus change with the seasons, and along with our personally chosen wine list, we hope it reflects the relaxed and friendly atmosphere we attempt to create at Knockderry Country House Hotel.

During the summer, the garden terrace is the ideal place for a light lunch or an early evening drink overlooking the lochside. The Lounge Bar with its magnificent woodcarvings and glorious crackling log fires make a suitably comfortable and relaxing environment in which to unwind at the end to a day walking, sailing or exploring the local area.

Dinner is served in the old wood-panelled dining room of the original house with its glorious stained glass and a charming outlook over Loch Long.

We recommend you reserve your table prior to arrival using the Additional Information section on the booking form. If you have any special dietary needs, please let us know and we will be pleased to meet your needs.

Other facilities

Most of the rooms have wireless internet access. However, due to the age and construction of the building please enquire when booking to ensure that you have wireless broadband access in your room.

We have established the Butler's Pantry on the first landing of the old house for your convenience. There you will find ironing boards, irons, shoe cleaning kit, needle and thread as well as useful items like stationery and a clothes brush. It also contains a collection of videos, CDs and DVDs. There are a variety of books and games available in the hotel.
