History to the present day

Langdon Court Hotel and Restaurant is brimming with extraordinary history. Henry VIII, his last wife Catherine Parr, Elizabeth I, Edward VII and society beauty and actress Lillie Langtry have all graced or resided within the walls of this house.

Records date back to the Domesday Book, demonstrating that the manor house was granted to a Norman baron called Jodhel for providing crucial support to King William after the Battle of Hastings. Jodhel in turn granted Langdon to a loyal knight named Walden, through the Pipard family until it was discovered by the reputable Courtenay family of Devon who resided within the estate for nearly 200 years. The last member of the Courtenay family to live in the house was the Marquis of Exeter who was beheaded for treason by Henry VIII in 1539. Later the house passed to Henry VIII`s widow Catherine Parr.

After Catherine Parr, Queen Elizabeth I granted Langdon Court to a highly noble and courageous gentleman called Vincent Calmady for his services to the Navy. The Calmadys treasured and enhanced Langdon Court until 1876 when the last daughters in the family line died.

Richard Cory purchased the house in 1876. During this time, extensive repairs and alterations were made to the house and on many occasions Richard Cory played host to his friend the Prince of Wales, later to become Edward VII, who often visited with his friend, Lillie Langtry.

Food and Drinks

Langdon Court Hotel provides two exquisite areas in which to dine. The a la carte restaurant boasts a reputation for inventive, flavoursome food and attentive service. All dishes are made using only the freshest local seafood, organically reared meat & game, with fresh fruit and vegetables in their seasonal prime, being drawn from the traditional kitchen garden.

Alongside the restaurant is the Brasserie Bar, situated separately, which offers pre-dinner and after-dinner drinks, bar meals or simply lunch or afternoon tea. Large bay windows frame the spectacular views of Wembury`s tumbling hills and the majestic gardens. Huge log fires roar in the cooler months or enjoy dining in the Jacobean gardens in warmer seasons.

Grounds and gardens

Langdon Court is set within ten acres of mature gardens and woodlands. The traditional, naturally majestic grounds and the English Renaissance Garden illustrate and celebrate layers of an incredible past.

Designed on three levels, the walled garden c. 1705 features the remains of a former hothouse, an aviary and a centrepiece fountain. The gardens are nurtured lovingly by Graham Titchmarsh, cousin to the famous British gardener and television personality Alan Titchmarsh. Our kitchen garden produces fresh vegetables and herbs that are used daily in the Restaurant and Brasserie Bar.

The grounds are registered with English Heritage and visitors are most welcome to enjoy and explore them all year round.
