Introduction
A small chapel tranquilly set all alone in charming countryside. Its atmospheric interior contains a perfect set of 17th-century timber furnishings, including a musicians' pew.
History to the present day
Langley Chapel is a 17th century Anglican parish church, located in a remote area approximately south of Acton Burnell, Shropshire. The chapel is most notable for its complete set of original 17th century wooden furniture and is also a Grade I listed building.
Langley is built on the site of an earlier medieval chapel and was built to provide worship for the nearby Langley Hall, whose ruins lie within a nearby private farm. The Chapel included wooden box pews, a musicians desk and Communion table bench seats.
Langley Hall disappeared in the 19th century and this was followed by the loss of the local population. The chapel fell into disuse and in 1914, it became one of the first buildings to be taken into the care of the state by the then Ministry of Works. Its abandonment has meant that the chapel escaped modernisation and remains a rare time capsule of how is stood in the 17th century.
