Introduction

With 26 rooms, all en suite, two function rooms, two bars and a bistro, the Lansdowne is a wonderful place to eat, drink and be merry, with enticing open fires in the winter just calling for visitors to linger in the bar over a meal and a pint of real ale. Owned by Arkell's, they will be working hard to renovate and restore this lovely hotel to its former glory. We have a wide ranging menu and a large choice of drinks including favorites such as Arkells 3b's and kingsdown.

History to the present day

The Hotel is situated in the market town of Calne, on the edge of the picturesque Marlborough Downs. The earliest known written reference of Calne is from an extract in the will of Saxon, king Eldred who died in 955,

“Also he bequeaths to the old monastery of the Winchester three towns, which are Downton, Damerham and Calne”.

Calne enjoyed prominence from 1200 to the early 19th century by virtue of the woollen trade, and indeed part of the hotel was used for wool stapling during that time. The hotel is one of Calne’s oldest surviving buildings; in fact, there was an inn on the site as early as 1565. Up until the 19th century it was known as the “Catherine Wheel” and renamed the Lansdowne Arms. Fairly recently the name changed to what it is today. Parts of the building, which make up the cobbled courtyard and can still be seen today, include an early eighteenth century building and 19th century stable block.

During the 19th century a spilt-level coach house also existed, now regretfully demolished, which had access on the first floor to the stable block. This access is still visible today. Whilst there was apparently a brew house within the hotel grounds as early as medieval times, asection of the hotel, now encompassing bedrooms, was used as a brew house from the mid nineteenth century up until around 1910. The spring water, which still runs today, was used in the brewery process. The front façade dates from Georgian times, though at one time the reception area was an arched access for carriages through to the courtyard; regress was through the archway as it is today.

In the courtyard on the rear of the front section is a window inscribed 1860. The lamp over the front door was added in the late 19th century and the barometer set on the front of the building is reputed to be the largest wheel barometer in England. Also on the front of the building is an insurance seal bearing the date 1696.

Food and Drinks

The hotel has its very own restaurant which serves home cooked English food seven days a week. It is open from 7am until 10am for breakfast then again at 11.30am until 2.30pm for lunch and 6.00pm until 9.30pm for evening meals. It also boasts its very own tap room bar which is great if you want to sit and relax.

By train, to Chippenham train station where there is a taxi rank and a bus station. To get to the hotel via bus catch the number 55 and it will drop you off right outside the door.
