Introduction
Lessudden House was originally a fortified tower-house.Two bedrooms are currently available for Bed & Breakfast guests; one Double the other Twin, both with their own bathrooms.
History to the present day
Lessudden House was rebuilt in the 16th Century after being badly damaged in 1544 by the invading armies of Henry VIII in the "rough wooing" when Henry tried (unsuccessfully) to coerce the Scots to have their Queen Mary marry the Prince of Wales. The house was acquired in the 17th Century by the Scotts of Raeburn, who built on a wing, enlarged the windows, and built a fine new staircase (1680's) to replace the old spiral one. As well as the present owners' ancestral portraits, those of the uncle and aunt of the famous Sir Walter Scott are prominent in the dining room, they were lairds in their time, and Sir Walter came to visit them.
The last of the line of these Scotts, who had owned the house for three centuries, died in the late 1960's aged about 100, and her legatee sold the house to the present owner's mother.
Food and Drinks
Full English Breakfast is included together with fruit juice, a special "house" muesli, cut fruit, and a selection of cereals, all available for selection. All meals are in the old dining room overlooked by a selection of ancestors. Dinner is sometimes available by prior arrangement.
Grounds and gardens
The house is set in parkland, with views of the Eildon Hills over the River Tweed to the north, and the Cheviot hills over open countryside to the south.
