Introduction
19th Century Lypiatt House is located within a short walk from the exclusive and fashionable area of Montpellier. Built in typical Victorian style, it is set in its own grounds, with a contemporary décor to enhance the traditional features of the generously sized bedrooms all en suite with well equipped bathrooms. Lypiatt House has an intimacy about it, small wonder that the quality most relished by its international clientele is its sense of ease and tranquillity.
The main shopping area is within walking distance from the house where a large selection of restaurants can be found.
History to the present day
Lypiatt House was built in 1867 in typical Victorian Villa style. It is set in its own grounds close to the elegant Georgian squares and crescents of the century before. Although the property has been modernised and some contemporary features introduced, the house retains many of its original Victorian features.
Cheltenham began as a Saxon village. At the time of the Domesday Book (1086) it was a small village with a population of less than 200. However Cheltenham became a focal point for the surrounding villages. In 1226 King Henry III gave the people of Cheltenham the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair.
Cheltenham was changed forever in the early 18th century when local people noticed pigeons pecking at salt deposits by a spring south of the town. People began to drink the water believing it would heal all kinds of illnesses. Before long the water was put on sale. Cheltenham became more popular still after King George III visited in 1788. A number of new spas were created between 1801 and 1825, these included Montpellier Spa with its magnificent gardens created after 1809 and Sherborne Spa which was created in 1818.
