History to the present day
The original Midland Hotel, Bradford was built between 1885 and 1890 by the Midland Railway Company and housed 115 bedrooms. It still retains some of these fine Victorian features including the Victorian Passageway with its floor to ceiling Burmantoft tiles. The quality ornate plasterwork in the Princes and French Ballrooms is rivalled only by similar examples in London. The high ceilings, glittering chandeliers and the architecture of the building is both breathtaking and inspiring, blending to make you appreciate the opulence of an era unfortunately long past.
The rich and famous stayed here during its heyday, including Laurel and Hardy, Paul Robeson, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. In 1905, Sir Henry Irving died on the main staircase. He was attended by his manager Bram Stoker, better known as the originator of Dracula. A small plaque erected in Reception records the stay of George Formby who stayed in 1940. Almost every Prime Minister up to Harold Wilson stayed in the hotel.
