Introduction
Mortons House Hotel is an historic 16th century Elizabethan Manor House situated in the beautiful village of Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck. The Manor is one of the earliest in Corfe and without doubt, the finest. Built in 1590 in the shape of an ‘E’ to honour Queen Elizabeth I, it has in more recent times been sympathetically converted into a 21 bedroom hotel.
The individual character rooms all have private bathroom, television, telephone, tea/coffee making facilities, and quality courtesy products. Many rooms have views of the Castle and others look towards the Steam Railway and Purbeck Hills.
During your stay, relax amongst Elizabethan splendour in the oak panelled lounge where the magnificent log fire burns in the colder months.
History to the present day
Dating back to circa 1590, the house was originally known as 'Dacombs', after William Dacomb. William was a wealthy gentleman owning many plots of land and the Dacomb family themselves were prominent citizens of the village of Corfe. 'Dacombs' was extended in 1666, probably with stone taken from the Castle. Inherited by John Morton in 1712, the house was then passed to the Bond family through marriage. Mortons House was once linked by underground tunnels to Corfe Castle. The imposing entrance hall has the original minster stone fireplace and leads to a magnificent oak-panelled drawing room, lined with exotic wooden friezes which were carved by Indonesian sailors.
Food and Drinks
The restaurant at Mortons House boasts 2 AA Fine Dining Rosettes for culinary excellence using predominantly local produce.
Mortons House has been showered with awards including 'Small Hotel of the Year' and a Tourist Board 'Gold Award'.
Grounds and gardens
Pretty walled gardens and sun terraces. Watch and listen to the steam train as it passes the hotel on its way to Swanage.
Other facilities
The Dacombe rooms, with their own terrace and seating area, are situated within the beautiful walled gardens and are accessible to all. These spacious rooms are equipped with wet rooms and walk-in showers.
