Introduction

This small hotel occupying one of the best situations in London is only a five minute walk from Marble Arch and is located on a quiet street opening onto Hyde Park. The Parkwood is a short walk across Hyde Park from Buckingham Palace, and is within walking distance of theatres, shops and tourist sites. Many of the bedrooms have recently been re-decorated and all have satellite television, radio-alarms and tea/coffee makers. Rooms are non-smoking. It is just seconds away from Tony & Cherie Blair's new pad in Connaught Square.

History to the present day

The buildings in Stanhope Place, where the Parkwood Hotel is situated, were built in the reign of William IV during the early 1800’s at the heart of a district then known as Tyburnia, located near the site of the infamous Tyburn Tree, the King's gallows between 1196 and 1783. The Tyburn tree was a huge triangular construction, the three posts were 18 feet high and the crossbeams were nine feet long - capable of hanging 24 (eight on each horizontal beam) prisoners at once. Records only show it being used at full capacity once, in 1649, but days when only one person was hanged were very rare.

A Full English Breakfast is served from 7.30am with a choice of various cereals, choice of fruit juices, tea and coffee, toast, choice of jams, marmalade and honey, eggs (fried, scrambled, poached), grilled bacon, sausages, tomatoes, baked beans.

Directions: From Heathrow Airport: Take the Express train into Paddington Station which leave every 15 minutes (journey time approximately 15 minutes).

From Paddington Station: Take a 5-minute taxi ride to the hotel approximately £5 Taxi (Black Cab).

By Tube: Get a ticket for Marble Arch and take the Piccadilly Line Tube into London (every 5-10 minutes). Change trains at Holborn onto the Central Line and take the westbound train to Marble Arch which takes 55 minutes. The first train service is at 5.40am.

Dr Hazel Sales, February 2012: Comfortable and warm. This is a well-run bed and breakfast, where the staff are pleasant and helpful. I stayed at the Parkwood on what were some of the coldest days of the 2011/12 winter, and was so relieved to find the place clean and beautifully warm. It is not one of the plushest places I have stayed at, but it is one of the better bed and breakfast establishments in my experience. For anyone looking to stay in London (where nice hotels can be horrendously expensive), this place is absolutely fine. Its location, only yards from Hyde Park and Oxford Street, is superb. The breakfasts are also decent and freshly cooked: a traditional and generous English breakfast. I stayed in Room 18, which is in the basement, next to the breakfast room. The receptionist offered me this room because it has its own bathroom, because the room I originally booked didn't have one, and I wanted one. There were one or two drawbacks to this room (poor reception for my mobile phone, the low rumble of the underground train far below very early, the sound of staff occasionally outside), but because everything else was so agreeable, I didn't bother grumbling (or complaining), and slept through the distant sound of trains. I enjoyed my stay there and would recommend the Parkwood to anyone.
