Introduction
The Rookery was created from the only remaining Georgian houses in Cowcross Street. These houses served many uses over the centuries, including Butcher, Cheese–monger and Bakery. The immediate vicinity, Clerkenwell is a vibrant and happening place, with some of London’s finest restaurants on St. John Street in addition to the many bars and clubs. Today, Smithfield and Clerkenwell is to the City of London what Covent Garden or Soho is to the West End. A district of exuberant architecture, busy cafes and colourful street life. With it’s antique emporium at the heart of Clerkenwell’s resurgence, The Rookery is a true gem in the area.
The interior boasts a certain antiquated, period charm. Each of the 33 rooms are different. They are all en-suite, with free broadband and WIFI access and air-conditioning.
History to the present day
The building, dating back to 1764, has been lovingly restored to its original period charm. Polished wood panelling, stone-flagged floors, open fires and individually sourced genuine antique furniture give the place a homely atmosphere - more private club than hotel. In fact the original 18th century bread ovens still survive below stairs.
Keeping the history alive, each of the rooms take the name of a former occupant of the building or after the many characters that plied their trade in the local area over the last two hundred years, be they a Judge, a rogue, a porter or a prostitute.
Food and Drinks
A hearty breakfast is delivered to your room in the morning at additional cost and room service is available throughout.
All rooms are equipped with a mini bar stocked with a range of drinks and snacks, alternatively guests may order from the room service menu or are invited to help themselves to drinks from the well stocked honesty bar located in the hotel conservatory.
Other facilities
Today anyone looking for a private and discreet meeting and events facility on the fringe of the square mile need look no further than The Rookery. The Rookery’s two elegant meeting and events rooms are furnished throughout with fine old paintings and prints and mellow antiques. The requirements of the 21st Century are met by state of the art facilities as well as helpful friendly service.
