Introduction
The Smuggler's Inn located in Osmington Mills has been sympathetically extended keeping a traditional feel with wooden beams, stone slab flooring and a very large original fireplace with two stove fires that are lit in winter.
Osmington Mills is away from the village of Osmington, down a winding country road. It is on the coast looking towards the Isle of Portland. The most notable thing about Osmington Mills is the Smuggler's Inn. Nestled down below the surrounding cottages and houses in its own little valley, it is in an idyllic spot with a stream at the front running down to the sea. This lovely old pub with parts said to date from the 13th century.
History to the present day
Dating back to the 13th Century the pub is on the Jurassic Coastal path with a history of Smuggling by Charles and the Champ families which led to the present name of the Smuggler's Inn.
This old pub with parts said to date from the 13th century was once the home of the leader of the most notorious gang of smugglers in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries, Emmanuel Charles.
Emmanuel Charles was running the pub, alongside smuggling and fishing, during the 1790s and he made some additions to the building. A related family, also heavily involved in smuggling, took over the running of the pub about 1840. First known of the family to run the pub was Ann Champ who was the landlady according to the 1841 census. It was then known as the Crown Inn. By 1848 she had passed it on to her son James Champ.
