Strata Florida Abbey: Aerial view of Strata Florida

Strata Florida Abbey (Mid Wales)

Introduction

Initially founded in 1164 on a nearby site, the present buildings were erected under the patronage of the Lord Rhys (d. 1197). The Cistercians at Strata Florida were loyal supporters of the Welsh Princes. Traditional burial place of Dafydd ap Gwilym, one of the great poets of medieval Wales.

History to the present day

Strata Florida’s hey-day was during the late 12th and 13th centuries, prior to the crushing of Wales by Edward I of England. During that period it established a reputation in scholasticism and as a centre of healing and spiritual well-being. From the later 13th century onwards it began a slow decline. That being said, it survived intact as one of the greater monastic houses until Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.

Following its dissolution, Strata Florida’s lands were taken over by Sir Richard Devereux, and then later by local gentry. The Stedman family leased and later took over the abbey and then built the plas or mansion on the site of the Abbey Refectory. The mansion passed, in the mid 18th century to the Powells of Nanteos and later to the Vaughans of Trawscoed, and finally to the Arch family, the present owners.
