Introduction
This listed 16th century fortified farmhouse has three luxury 5 star guest rooms. All are ensuite or with a private bathroom and Wi-fi Internet. In an outstanding hillside location overlooking the Irthing Valley and just 300 yards from the Hadrian's Wall National Trail at Birdoswald in Cumbria.
History to the present day
An Act of Parliament in 1555 made it compulsory for everyone living in the twenty mile wide Border Zone to build their own defences against reivers and cross-border raiders. Not everyone complied but the owners of 'The Hill' did. In 1595 this 'bastle' was built and while it has all the comforts of the 21st century, its original characteristics have remained.
Food and Drinks
Full English breakfast is served in The Dining Room that contains a large pine table made from the wood of a 17th century mill. The Long Room, with its log fire and four foot thick walls is a cosy lounge with wood burning stove and views for the use of guests.
Grounds and gardens
The Hill is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with much wildlife on display even the odd red squirrel around the property. Hadrian's Wall is an obvious 'must see' with the National Trail and visitor centres like Birdoswald Roman Fort just a short walk away.

Customer feedback
We guarantee that all our feedback is genuine and can only be submitted by people who have booked through our websites.
Dr J F Andrews, March 2012: One of the best b&b's we've ever stayed in. We'd highly recommend it.
Ms Jolene DiLoreto, March 2012: This was a wonderful place to stop after a long day of hiking. It's a little out of the way of the immediate town, but well worth it. Elaine was a great hostess. The rooms were very comfortable with a great view to wake up to in the morning! Breakfast was delicious. Elaine knew how to cater to everyone's tastes!
Mrs Jill Cohen, March 2012: Our stay was superb. The overall hospitality of tea and cakes/scones/biscuits each time we returned to Hill on the Wall was a highlight. A very warm atmosphere. The communal breakfast table was also a great idea so you could chat with other guests. The best B&B we stayed in whilst in the UK. Would highly recommend.
Mrs Sue Harris, October 2011: Elaine made us feel most welcomed and catered for your every need, especially providing a fantastic breakfast.
Mrs Frances Gee, September 2011: Host very friendly and helpful, greeting us with tea and cake on arrival. She was most kind as to take my toilet bag (forgotten in the bathroom) to a neighbouring B+B for us to collect on our return to the area 2 weeks later, since she was not available that day.
Mr Jon Vaughan, August 2011: Probably the best accomodation experience we have ever had - everything was perfect and the unexpected extras provided were delightful. Elaine was a wonderful host and cook. We wish we could have stayed longer.
Mrs Helen Ralphs, August 2011: Brilliant accommodation and lovely hostess would recommend to friends and family.
Dr John Baker, August 2011: The room was comfortable and clean and we enjoyed our stay.
Dr Derek Woodford, June 2011: unbeatable!
Ms Jessica Hake, June 2011: What a delight Elaine is! Very cute farmhouse in remote area. Great experience overall!
Mr Matthew Dorian, May 2011: Wonderful and too cheap! We would happily pay more. This was a touch of luxury. Thank you!
Mr Paul McCormick, March 2011: The Hill on the Wall is a wonderful B&B run by Elaine & Dick. Their attention to detail is second to none. My wife and i had a relaxing time in this beautiful house and would recommend it to anyone.
Anthony Russell, September 2010: Best B&B I have ever stayed in.
