Introduction

Friendly and informal accommodation offered at this converted grade 2 star listed water cornmill in the Upper Wye Valley. This early 19th century brick built Mill retains all its original machinery with the dining area created amongst the jumble of grain bins, shutes, shafts and gear wheels. The Mill has two double en suite rooms and a twin en suite room in the main building as well as an en suite bunkroom for 1 or 2 people and a self catering cabin in the old cider orchard overlooking the Millstream. There is also a small campsite.  The mill has been awarded a 4 star rating by Visit Wales. All the catering is vegetarian

A brilliant base for exploring the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains or Radnor Hills on foot, horseback, bicycle or in free flight and for canoeing or rafting the River Wye or simply relaxing and enjoying the diversity of wildlife, flora and fauna of this natural environment.

 

History to the present day

Trericket Mill was an important water corn mill which formerly ground corn for the Glanusk Estate. Local stories tell that it was lost to Lord Chichester as part of a gambling debt and became part of the Llangoed Estate at that time. It stands on the Sgithwen Brook and was initially powered via an overshot wheel which was then modernised to run from a more efficient water turbine. Sadly the Mill has not turned since the 1930's but all the machinery remains intact and the dining room has been created amongst the shutes, grain bins and milling machinery.

Food and Drinks

Breakfast is served in the characterful dining room amongst the old milling machinery. All the catering is vegetarian using local, organic and fair-trade produce wherever possible. Breakfast is served between 8.30am - 9.30am but this can be earlier by prior arrangement.

Breakfast includes a buffet of cereals, fruit and yoghurt including our speciality home-made museli soaked overnight in apple juice, followed by a choice which includes a "full monty " cooked breakfast with home-made bean, basil and tomato sausages, scrambled egg, tomato, mushrooms and baked beans. Other options include boiled eggs (from their own ducks or hens) or a continental breakfast with croissant, French bread and Welsh cheese or home-made jam. This is all rounded off with toast made from home made organic bread with home made jams and marmalade.

A 3 course evening meal is offered at £18.50 and usually includes a choice of 2 starters including a home made soup, followed by a set main course such as chick pea and aubergine tagine with moroccan cous cous, sweet potato, courgettes and spinach and a choice of 2 or more desserts. Alternatively a "Simple Supper" option for £8 which would typically be a pasta, rice or salad dish. An interesting selection of soft drinks are available or you are welcome to bring your own wine to drink with the meal.

Packed lunches can be prepared if booked the evening before. Vegan and other special diets are not a problem!

Grounds and gardens

The Mill has a small riverside garden beside the Sgithwen Brook which is a site of special scientific interest. On the other side of the stream across the footbridge, the old cider orchard is home to the family of ducks and hens, and a selection of fruit trees and the bunkhouse.

A drying room is available to dry any wet clothes overnight. Cycle storage and parking is available. There is free Wi-Fi.

Set back on the A470 between the market towns of Brecon, Hay on Wye and Builth Wells, 1 mile south of the village of Erwood. Approx 3.5 hours drive from London, 1 hour from Cardiff, 1.5 hours from Bristol.
