Introduction

Trinity Hall, known as the ‘Hidden Hall’, is situated in the very heart of Cambridge. An ideal location for visitors, it is only a short walk from restaurants, bars, museums and attractions.

The accommodation available houses undergraduates during term time. The rooms are therefore not equipped to four star hotel standard, but they are clean and comfortable. All bedrooms have a handwash basin, toiletries, towels & free internet access. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided in a kitchen located close to the bedrooms.

Please note we are unable to accept bookings for Stag and Hen parties.

History to the present day

The fifth oldest College of Cambridge University, Trinity Hall was founded by Bishop William Bateman of Norwich in 1350. This elegant venue holds many architectural treasures and historical artefacts dating back to Medieval times.

Nestled between Clare and Trinity Colleges, Trinity Hall lies beside the River Cam in the centre of Cambridge. With its gardens, architecture and riverside position, Henry James said of it, “If I were called upon to mention the prettiest corner of the world, I should draw a thoughtful sigh and point the way to the gardens of Trinity Hall.”

Trinity Hall was founded immediately after the Black Death of 1349, a disaster which, among other things, resulted in a shortage of clergymen and lawyers. To this day, the College maintains a very strong tradition in the study of law.

The main College buildings originated from the purchase of a house from John de Crauden, which was intended for the use of his monks during their period of study in Cambridge. In the early days of Oxford & Cambridge Universities the term college only referred to the group of students who lived within a Hall. Later on it became fashionable to adopt the name College instead of Hall. However by the time this became fashionable Henry VIII had created his own Trinity College next door leaving Trinity Hall no option but to remain as Trinity Hall.
