History to the present day
Ty Mawr Mansions original date is unknown, however it can be seen from the side of the Mansion in the carpark that this is one modest house that has been extended to make a Mansion. It is known that the estate existed in the 1600s when the original sheriff of Cilcennin, John Hughes, resided here. The grand extensions were put onto the Mansion in 1830 for Captain Pryse. He instructed the famous architect Cockrell to design and complete the extension. Cockrell is famous as he designed the University of Wales as well as many of the Bank of England's properties.
Captain Pryse was a Captain of the Clipper Ships at the time, which is how he amassed his fortune.
Originally the Mansion was rendered, however this was removed in the early 1970's and never replaced. The Mansion has a beautiful lantern roof above the stairwell which is completely original to the house and throws light down throughout the stairs and hallways. Above the doors off the Main Reception area are panels which originally were thought to be plaster however further investigation found that they are carved leather.
Throughout the conversion to its current form, it was important to maintain and restore existing features and so today the Mansion would not be disimilar to days gone by.
Food and Drinks
Breakfast is served in the restaurant, with a selection of cereals, homemade museli, fruits and compotes as well as homemade yoghurt.
