Recently refurbished to an extremely high standard Walworth Castle Hotel really is the ideal venue to sample England's living history. Each of the 34 bedrooms and numerous reception rooms have their own particular character, many with individually designed upholstery. Choose from Standard, Executive rooms or one of the character suite rooms such as the King James Suite which features a tented double jacuzzi bath, a dramatic 16th century ceiling, lounge area and a secret doorway leading to a circular tower which hosts a superb King sized four-poster bed.

History to the present day

Walworth Castle is a 16th century mansion house, built in the style of a medieval castle. It is a Grade 1 listed building. It was completed around 1600, probably by Thomas Holt for Thomas Jenison. It stands on the site of a former manor house or castle built in the 12th century by the Hansard family. The estate passed through the hands of the Ayscoughs and Aylmers besides the Hansards and Jenisons, and became a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II and then a girls' boarding school after the war. It has been a hotel since 1981.

One famous visitor to the castle was King James, who stayed at Walworth Castle on April 14th 1603, when he was travelling from Scotland to London for his coronation.

Food and Drinks

A full English breakfast is included and served in the recently refurbished 16th Century Hansards Restaurant. The restaurant has received, a AA Rosette for food excellence, and it serves contemporary dishes in a traditional setting. Open for reservations every evening and Sunday Lunch.

For a dining experience with a difference, Hansard's Library Tower is available for private parties of 2 to 8 people. In the original round tower of the Castle, the library is ideal for an intimate meal for two or a small family gathering. Enjoy an aperitif on arrival in the comfort of the lounge whilst making your selection from the extensive menu.

The Farmers Bar is a traditional English pub. With hearty good food and a good atmosphere, it serves traditional bar meals and sandwiches around a roaring log fire. On week days, the Farmers Bar is open every lunchtime from 12.00pm until 2.00pm and again in the evening from 6.00pm until 11.00pm, where food is served until 9.30pm.
