History to the present day

A Grade I listed Tudor building which was possibly built by the last Abbot of Bury St. Edmunds. Mary Tudor, Dowager Queen of France and Duchess of Suffolk visited the property and the Abbot, to commemorate the royal visit had her coat of arms placed over the door to the gatehouse.

The highly decorative brick gatehouse was built circa 1530 and has a chamber       overlooking the entrance with a wall-painting, known as the 'Four Ages Man', thought to date from 1575. Traces of paint elsewhere in the room would suggest that the whole room may originally have been painted. A colonnade links the gatehouse to the house which was originally surrounded by a moat long since filled in. The property is packed with many original features such as the largest inglenook fireplace in Suffolk, exposed beams and original oak floors.
