Introduction
Elizabeth I was Queen of England when The White Hart first opened its doors and it has always been the principal inn at Cricklade, a town which calls itself "the threshold of the Cotswolds".
Perfectly located just off the A419 midway between Swindon and Cirencester, the hotel is ideally placed for those touring the area on business or purely for pleasure. All 14 rooms are en-suite and well appointed with all the conveniences expected by the modern traveller including Wi-fi.
History to the present day
The inn had to wait over 250 years before its heyday which came after the Vale of White Horse hunt split into two 'counties'. The year was 1886 and when the hunt built new kennels on the edge of town, Cricklade became a major centre for hunting in the area. It was rebuilt in 1890 to provide suitable accommodation for hunting people who would stay for part of the season. Even today, it still oozes late Victorian comfort whether you are staying overnight or just visiting the large, plush lounge.
Just to underline its position as the town's leading licensed premises, The White Hart has a unique and splendid canopy which spans the pavement. Arkell's are relatively new to The White Hart, having bought the pub in 1973, and intend to ensure that The White Hart's proud traditions are carried on for years to come.
