You may decide to spoil yourself with a stay in one of the suites - each of them has a separate sitting room or area and one has a double wet room and a TV you can watch from the bath!
The surrounding scenery is spectacular, the accommodation is luxurious, the food and wine is amongst the best in Britain and The White Swan Inn's team is about the friendliest you'll ever come across.
History to the present day
The White Swan Inn is family owned and run. It has been in the ownership of the Buchanan family for 25 years, and the new Buchanan generation took over in 1996.
Originally built in 1532 as a four-room cottage, it was soon extended and pressed into service as a coaching inn for the York to Whitby stagecoach. Devious smugglers moving salt from Whitby via Saltersgate to York also used it.
Still visible today at the side of the old stone building are the joist stones that once supported an aerial walkway. It went from what is now bedroom 2 across the alley and into the small entrance next-door, also still visible.
According to the legend, when the Excise man came looking for salt and was busy searching the cellars, the smugglers used this route to transfer the salt next door.
The White Swan Inn has been open for business as an inn more or less ever since the 16th century. Two notable exceptions were when it served as the town's Court House for a brief spell, and during the last War when it served as Pickering Garrison's NCO Mess.
Food and Drinks
The stunning yet relaxed restaurant with its stone flagged floors and roaring fire in the winter is known for its fantastic food using only the freshest local ingredients. There are big comfortable sofas to sink into whilst you choose your dinner, a proper bar and cellar serving at least 6 wines by the glass and a choice of real ales all from Yorkshire.
It all begins with the best and freshest local ingredients that working with local suppliers ensures. And at The White Swan Inn local means local. The head chef Darren Clemmit personally guarantees that over 80% the ingredients are hand picked from the best Yorkshire has to offer.
Everything is homemade including most of the bread, the ice cream, chutneys and conserves … even the ketchup! With a menu that changes monthly, you’ll get to choose from traditional Yorkshire favourites as well as great seasonal menu selections.
Lunch is served from 12.00pm until 2.00pm and dinner from 6:45pm until 9.00pm. To reserve your table, please write your requirements in the Additional Information section of the booking form.
