Introduction

Winder Hall Country House Hotel is an historic house in the peaceful village of Low Lorton in the Lake District. This Jacobean manor house, with its secluded location, offers something extra special to guests.

The guest bedrooms are comfortably furnished and individually decorated boasting wonderful views. There are four posters, and doubles, all offering en-suite bathrooms (please advise if you prefer a bath or shower as not all rooms have both).

Children are welcome at Winder Hall, a reduced tariff for children sharing a room with their parents is offered. Please see Available Rooms for the promotion codes. Children are welcome to join their parents in the Dining Room if they are old enough to enjoy the evening meal. A children’s tea is available as an alternative.

History to the present day

Winder Hall has an interesting and unusual history. Although the present fabric dates from the 17th & 19th centuries and includes an ancient priest hole, there has been a manor house on the site since Saxon times (i.e. before 1066).

It is recorded that Malcolm III of Scots visited the Lord of the Manor in 1053 and was royally entertained, as was his prerogative, as at that time the whole of the Lake District formed part of the kingdom of Scotland.

Food and Drinks

One thing you will find different about Winder Hall is the kitchen. Unlike big hotels, you are welcome to pop in for a chat and find out what’s cooking.

Breakfast is served in the Dining Room and there is plenty to choose from including freshly-brewed coffee, croissants, freshly-squeezed orange juice, fruit salad, home-cured bacon, organic Cumberland sausage, perhaps gently poached smoked haddock, not forgetting the freshest free-range eggs from Winder Hall’s own hens.

If you wish to stop for afternoon tea, home-made scones, cakes and sandwiches are served with fresh loose-leaf organic tea and Fairtrade coffees. Enjoy an apéritif before dinner in the new oak-panelled bar in the lounge.

The Victorian Dining Room is the heart of the house. A large open fire at one end is complemented by a grand piano, oak-panelling and deep-set, mullioned windows. Overlooking an enclosed garden with a fountain and trimmed box hedges, guests can look out on the near-by fells. Passionate about food, the menu incorporates local ingredients, organic meats and home-grown free-range eggs and pork.

Grounds and gardens

Hidden from the house and overlooking the river meadow, the new Summer House is equipped with a Nordic sauna and intimate Jacuzzi hot tub.

Whatever the time of year, take a walk down to the summer house. Breathe in the scent of daffodils, rhododendrons, wild flowers, rosemary and cedar. Look out over the meadow to the farms nestling on the back-drop of our local fells.

Other facilities

Car parking available onsite. Laundry and drying room for wet anoraks and muddy clothes. Jigsaws, games and a well stocked bar for days in. Packed lunch available on request. Rucksacks, maps and route cards for days out.

Collect your own eggs for breakfast and help feed the pigs each afternoon.
